Dyslexia

This workshop aims to introduce participants to current neuropsychological approaches to the nature, assessment and remediation of developmental reading disorders. Theoretical and empirical issues in the definition and diagnosis of dyslexia will be discussed, with consideration of differential diagnosis of language disorders and other learning disabilities. Factors involved in the normal development of children’s reading will be explored, with examination of the role of phonological processes in the acquisition of reading skills. Participants will be introduced to current research and practice in the subtyping of reading disabilities. Cognitive models of reading will be presented and critically evaluated, along with consideration of research into the neurobiology of dyslexia. The role of psychological assessment in diagnosis and classification will be explored, with discussion and evaluation of the benefits and disadvantages associated with the use of certain tests. The utility of neuropsychological models and methods in the design and implementation of interventions will be evaluated.

Learning objectives
