Learning disabilities (1-day workshop) This one-day workshop aims to introduce participants to current neuropsychological approaches to the nature, assessment and remediation of developmental learning disabilities in children and adolescents. Theoretical and empirical issues in the definition and diagnosis of learning disabilities will be discussed, and different approaches to the classification of learning disabilities into subtypes will be compared and evaluated. A neuropsychological approach to subtyping will be advanced, which emphasizes examination of the cognitive processing underlying performance in academic domains. The differential diagnosis of types of learning disabilities will be discussed in detail, with consideration of language disorders, reading disorders, arithmetic disorders, nonverbal learning disabilities and ADHD. The role of psychological assessment in diagnosis and classification will be explored, with discussion and evaluation of the benefits and disadvantages associated with the use of popular psychological tests such as the WISC-IV, WIAT-II, CELF-4, SB-V, DAS and CMS. The utility of neuropsychological models and methods in the design and implementation of interventions will be reviewed.
