Nonverbal learning disorders It has long been recognized that certain children and adolescents manifest significant problems in social interaction and the performance of complex cognitive operations, while displaying apparently normal linguistic and general intellectual abilities. Psychological investigations into the cognitive functioning of these individuals have revealed a neuropsychological profile chiefly characterized by deficits in executive functions and specific difficulties in social perception, judgement and reasoning. In recent years, the term nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD) has been increasingly employed to refer to the constellation of cognitive and behavioural deficits characteristically observed in this group of children and adolescents. This workshop provides a comprehensive overview of recent research in NLD, with a focus on the implications of this work for psychological practice. Current theoretical formulations of NLD are explored, and the validity and clinical utility of the syndrome are critically evaluated. Recent advances in assessment and diagnosis are examined, with a focus on test selection and interpretation of data. The implications of this work for the planning and implementation of interventions for children and adolescents who exhibit the NLD profile are discussed.
