Traumatic brain injury

The assessment and management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children presents a number of theoretical and practical problems for the treatment team. Due to the range and diversity of variables contributing to a child’s post-injury presentation, assessment of residual impairments requires a detailed, multifocal assessment utilising multiple assessment methodologies and instruments. The planning of appropriate cognitive, educational and psychosocial interventions necessitates the involvement and collaboration of a range of health and education professionals.

This workshop will discuss various aspects of current practice in neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation of children following TBI. Issues to be discussed include the nature and course of recovery following TBI, the assessment of cognitive and psychosocial sequelae, and the design and implementation of psychological interventions.

The contribution of traumatic stress disorders to the presentation of children following motor vehicle accidents will also be examined, with consideration of its nature, incidence and course following traumatic brain injury.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  • detail the pathology of TBI

  • describe the common cognitive sequelae of TBI

  • plan a comprehensive assessment of the child’s cognitive and psychosocial functioning following TBI

  • outline a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for a child with a TBI

  • identify features characteristic of traumatic stress disorders ifollowing TBI n childhood
