Learning disabilities and the WISC-IV

This one-day workshop aims to introduce participants to

  • the nature, assessment and diagnosis of developmental learning disabilities in children and adolescents.

  • the application of the new Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) to the assessment of children with learning disabilities

Theoretical and empirical issues in the definition and diagnosis of learning disabilities will be discussed. Different approaches to the classification of learning disabilities into subtypes will be compared and evaluated. A neuropsychological approach to subtyping will be advanced, which emphasizes examination of the cognitive processing underlying performance in academic domains.

The differential diagnosis of types of developmental cognitive disorders will be discussed in detail, with consideration of language disorders, reading disorders, arithmetic disorders, nonverbal learning disabilities and ADHD.

The role of psychological assessment in diagnosis and classification will be explored, with discussion and evaluation of the use of the WISC-IV, WIAT-II, and other tests of cognitive functioning and academic achievement.

Learning objectives

By the completion of the workshop, participants should

  • understand the major theoretical issues in the definition and diagnosis of learning disabilities

  • be familiar with neuropsychological subtypes of learning disabilities

  • be aware of the psychological tests most useful in assessing children with learning disabilities

  • interpret the results obtained from the WISC-IV and WIAT-II

  • be able to apply this knowledge to the assessment of children with developmental learning disabilities
